WASTE SERVICES RENEWS POOLE HARBOUR COMMISSIONERS WASTE AND RECYCLING CONTRACT
Southampton, 30 April 2007 - Waste Services (UK) Ltd, the south coast-based commercial waste disposal and recycling specialist (www.wasteservices.co.uk) that is part of the Verdant Group plc (www.verdant-group.co.uk), has renewed a three-year contract with the Poole Harbour Commissioners. The new contract, starting in April 2007, comprises commercial waste minimization, collection and recycling, plus site clearance services, at the Port of Poole.
Poole Harbour is one of the world’s largest natural harbours, catering for cross-Channel ferries, cargo vessels and a local fishing fleet, as well as recreational sailing and water sports. An estimated 380 cargo ships and 1,500 ferry sailings use Poole each year, with around 80,000 heavy goods vehicles and other vehicles passing through the port.
A team of up to 12 Waste Services’ staff will collect commercial waste and recyclables from the Port’s most heavily used public areas on a daily cycle (twice daily at weekends). The 60 pieces of collection equipment provided includes dual purpose rear end loader containers, wheeled bins, bulk Rolonof bins and rear end loaders, each with its own collection schedule.
Waste Services will collect waste, produced by ships as well as portside activities, such as general ship garbage, cruise liner waste, international catering waste, shellfish waste (Category 2 animal by-products), and paint scrapings. Liquid and hazardous materials, such as oils, greases, industrial fluids and filters, solvents, batteries, paint and sump pit fluids, are collected in 205 litre clip top drums. Recyclables collected include scrap metal, cardboard, paper, glass, plastics and cans, tyres and timber.
According to Waste Services’ business manager Paula Sinclair, the broad-ranging contract includes 24/7 emergency response (typically for plant equipment hydraulic fluid spills). “Our first three year contract with the Commissioners saw us deal with all sorts of every-day and unusual waste materials,” she said. “We were even called out to remove a dismantled walk-in fridge, abandoned cars and boats. No two days are the same, which makes it interesting for the team, and so we’re all delighted to renew our business relationship.”
Sally Porter, Environment Adviser at the Poole Harbour Commissioners, said the popularity of the port and harbour for commercial and leisure use demanded a ‘highly professional’ approach to waste collection, minimization and recycling. “The Commissioners have a publicly-available waste management plan in line with its entrusted duty to conserve and improve the harbour environment,” she explained. “Waste Services provides an excellent service, understands our unique needs, responds to whatever situation arises, and is always willing to help.”
