WASTE SERVICES WINS NEW FOREST COUNCIL GLASS BANK CONTRACT
Southampton, 13 June 2007 – Commercial waste and recycling collection specialist Waste Services (UK) Ltd (www.wasteservices.co.uk) today announced that it has been awarded a four year contract to collect recyclable glass throughout the New Forest District Council (www.nfdc.gov.uk) area.
The new contract, which began in April, will see Waste Services emptying glass banks located throughout urban and rural parts of the New Forest council area. These include recycling facilities within towns such as Lymington, New Milton and Lyndhurst, as well as in the New Forest National Park, one of Britain’s most popular areas of ancient woodland and heath.
The Park, established by William the Conqueror in 1079, attracts hundreds of thousands of walkers, cyclists and riders each year, drawn by its outstanding variety of fauna and flora. The New Forest National Park Authority, the Forestry Commission and New Forest District Council together maintain very high environmental standards in the Park.
A Waste Services skip vehicle will visit New Forest Council’s recycling centres in numerous towns and villages on a varying cycle, according to their popularity. An empty glass bank will be re-sited whenever a full glass bank is uplifted, and glass recyclables will be taken to the Recresco glass recycling facility at Southampton docks.
Waste Services’ ability to provide a highly flexible, fast response service will ensure that glass banks which fill quickly, for example during the height of the summer visitor season, will be quickly replaced.
Over the year 2007/08, it is expected that over 750 tonnes of glass will be captured through public glass banks. New Forest is one of 13 district and local councils which, together with Hampshire County Council, form part of the Project Integra partnership. New Forest District Council achieved a combined recycling rate of over 27% in 2004/05, diverting some 230,000 tonnes of recyclable materials and is on target to achieve its government target of 30% for 2006/07.
New Forest District Council Assistant Director of Commercial Services, Colin Read, said: “We have a good and improving record for our recycling and waste reduction activities, and providing a reliable, quality service for collecting recyclables is a key part of that. Given our location in one of the most beautiful parts of Britain, it’s paramount that we do everything we can to reduce waste and litter generated by residents and visitors alike. Waste Services will provide an important collection service supporting our glass recycling operations, a service based on efficiency, reliability and flexibility.”
Waste Services managing director Roger Edwards added: “The whole Waste Services team is delighted by the news of this contract. With our headquarters in Southampton and operational centres across the south coast, we value the whole New Forest area as an area of exceptional natural beauty and one where high environmental standards are vital. Waste Services is committed to providing a high quality professional service that will help reduce waste and enhance the attractions of the area.”
