BEAULIEU AND GOODWOOD CHOOSE WASTE SERVICES’ EXPERTISE FOR MAJOR PUBLIC EVENTS

Southampton, 16th July 2007 – Commercial waste and recycling collection specialist Waste Services (UK) Ltd (www.wasteservices.co.uk) has secured two notable customers for its expertise in delivering quality waste and recycling support for major public events. The Verdant Group subsidiary has secured a five year contract with Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd, and was appointed for a sixth year to support the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Elsewhere, the Southampton-based company also provided a full waste collection service, based on wheeled bins, a collection vehicle, a sweeper and crew, for the recent prestigious week-long Eisteddfod, held at the Nantyci show ground in Carmarthen. Over 15,000 children and young people from around the world competed at the event, which was attended by over 100,000 people and which also has a waste reduction and recycling policy.

In July, Waste Services will handle waste collection, using 50 wheeled bins, a collection vehicle and a sweeper, at the Hitchin Festival in Hertfordshire.

Roger Edwards, Waste Services’ managing director, said the new contracts endorse ‘our professional capability, quality focus, and understanding of the finer nuances of dealing with major public events’.

“Working with Beaulieu as a partner over a number of years will deliver a methodical yet highly flexible, quality service that is efficient, saves money and supports Beaulieu’s fantastic reputation,” he said. “Servicing Goodwood’s waste and recycling collection requirements for the sixth year feels like getting the chequered flag in a race. We’re also delighted to have been chosen to support one of Wales’ biggest public events.”

Keeping Beaulieu Beautiful

The new contract for Beaulieu, the famous historic country setting for the National Motor Museum, Palace House and Abbey in the New Forest National Park, will see Waste Services providing wheeled waste and recycling collection bins, plus a full collection service with a dedicated vehicle and crew, at many of Beaulieu’s major public events. This is the first time a focused recycling service has been provided for Beaulieu’s events.

These include the world-famous International Autojumble and Automart events (being held on 8th / 9th September), music concerts, firework displays, and motorcycle, military vehicle and caravan shows. Other summer events, drawing thousands of participants, spectators and visitors annually, feature car rally meetings for marques such as Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, Morgan, Austin 750 and Smart.

As part of its contract, and following in-depth research and a site survey, Waste Services designed a flexible master plan for servicing Beaulieu’s events, using historic visitor numbers to plan bin quantities, locations and collection schedules for each.

This maximizes the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of an important service regarded as vital for rapidly collecting and removing waste and recyclable materials, usually after closing hours, as well as ensuring rapid response flexibility to deal with unexpected needs. By capturing and analysing ‘live’ service information, Waste Services and Beaulieu Enterprises will fine-tune the plan to improve the service year on year.

Dedicated recycling bins collect cardboard, paper and glass generated by exhibitors and visitors alike which is then sent for off-site processing. Waste materials are collected and transferred to specific disposal points for further processing and disposal.

Judith Maddox, events manager with Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd, commented: “Beaulieu is delighted with the service we have received from Waste Services, enabling us to put in place a more efficient and economical waste management system. The introduction of waste recycling points has meant that both our exhibitors and contractors have been able to recycle waste that previously would have gone to landfill.

“We look forward to working with Waste Services over the next five years and appreciate both their service flexibility and advice on improving our waste management systems. We have already received several compliments on the new wheeled bins system which has considerably increased waste collection capacity and has played a huge part in improving the cleanliness of our fields during and immediately after events.”

Goodwood Gears Up

The famous Festival of Speed at Goodwood in Sussex was supported by Waste Services for a sixth year after being re-appointed by lead contractor, Taurus. The annual Festival of Speed in late June usually draws well over 100,000 visitors to see unique cars and famous drivers. In the past, Waste Services has also provided its services for sister event, the three day Goodwood Revival. This historic vehicle meeting in September attracts almost 100,000 enthusiasts to see the famed hillclimb event and historic car and motorcycle racing on the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

In line with a flexible, fast-response plan agreed with Taurus and the organisers to ensure that waste arising from the thousands of visitors, exhibitors and catering facilities was collected quickly, Waste Services supplied new wheeled bins and rear-end load containers, plus two collection vehicles with experienced crews. Up to 50 tonnes of waste, together with recyclables like glass, paper and cardboard, as well as surplus exhibitor stand materials, was collected overnight from the bins and containers, and taken to an on-site assembly area for transfer to a materials sorting and disposal facility.

During the day, collection vehicles remained strategically parked, while Waste Services’ crew was accommodated on site, enabling them to start work immediately at the end of each day.
